Scratch That...

August 2, 2011 19:59 by Donna

Earlier today, I shared with you the letter I wrote to Legislator Jon Cooper regarding my thoughts on his Pet Store Companion Animal Rating System which is currently being drafted, and I suggested you write something along the same lines.

Well, it appears I was wrong about what to include in those letters. (Hey, it happens...)

Anyway, Mr. Cooper responded to my letter, (already), and assured me that his "Pet Store Companion Animal Rating System absolutely will rely heavily on the quality of care provided to dogs at the breeding facilities that supply the pet stores," however, he wanted to clarify that what he is looking for from me and my readers, (which means YOU), is ideas for "Specific Criteria" which we would all like to see rated.

So, time to go brainstorm and draft another letter...

Once again, I hope all of you will join me in sharing your ideas and thoughts on this important project.

I am a bit confused.  It is my understanding that these breeding facilities are often in the mid-west states, and they ship to pet stores all over the country.  How would New York know firsthand, the conditions of a "breeder" in another state?

Kelly - That is definitely the question that is on my mind. To me, the state of the breeders facilities is MUCH more important than the shape of the pet stores themselves - and who is going to be regulating and rating the breeders? And how? I'm curious to read this new resolution when it's introduced.

One of my suggestions to Legislator Cooper is that the breeding facility has to be an open kennel, in that they are open to either the general public or an animal welfare group like the Humane Society of the United States (not the USDA, they don't count) coming in and checking out their kennels' and breeder dogs' conditions. There are lots of members of responsible anti-puppymill groups across the midwest who would gladly volunteer to do open inspections -- I imagine it beats stuffing an undercover camera down your shirt. If the kennel has a problem with that, they (and the pet store that buys from them) can kiss their rating goodbye -- and I'd love to hear the excuse they come up with for operating in secrecy. LOVE to.

By the way, I'm Jon's little sister, and I've been doing puppymill/byb rescue in Texas on my own for about ten years. Jon has been fighting for animal welfare since he was in junior high, and when Jon says he's going to make it work, you can bet he's going to do just that. He doesn't quit on anything.

Aimee - Great suggestion - better than any I've come up with. I was going to ask if you made that suggestion to Jon Cooper, but I'm guessing since you came back to say you are his sister(and I was wondering about the name) that you've already spoken your mind. Smile

Thanks for stopping by to comment!
