Of Drugs and Dogs II

November 28, 2010 03:52 by Donna

Tonight's doggie dinner was worse than yesterday's!

Leah and Toby were BOTH at the vet today for simultaneous ear infections. At first, the vet's office told me they only had room in their schedule to see one dog.

What was I supposed to do - choose who I loved more?

But after a second phone call, and the good fortune that one of the vets finished with surgery early today, they agreed to see both dogs. Leah has a bacterial infection in her left ear, most likely thanks to allergies. Toby has a yeast infection in both ears - with his left one being the worst of the two. Much worse!

His ear is an oozing volcano of black gunk.

In addition to everything I listed Wednesday, now Toby is also getting 1 Probiotic tablet - to try and combat the yeast, and Leah is getting 50 mg of Hydroxyzine Pamoate (expensive benedryl) to help alleviate the allergy symptoms.

PLUS - Toby's left ear needs to be cleaned every day, but his right ear and Leah's left ear only need to be cleaned every other day. What's more – every day for the next ten days - Toby needs "a small amount" (very scientific unit of measurement) of Mometamax otic in both ears, while Leah needs the same amount (whatever that is), but only in her left ear.

BUT WE MUST NOT USE THE SAME BOTTLE, or they may cross contaminate the yeast and the bacteria with each other.

Thank goodness Nick is home the next few nights to help me get used to the routine. He even bought two pill organizers to help us both figure out which end is up, but several of the pills don't fit in it, and I think putting Meadow's berry supplement powder in it would NOT be a good idea. I'm afraid of when I am on my own...
