Ramblings of a dog writer

Finding Balance

March 5, 2011 13:14 by Donna

After working diligently to set up a Donna and the Dogs page on Facebook, and finally beginning to accumulate a few fans, I have decided to put an end to the very entity I created. On March 20, 2011, I will be officially closing my Donna and the Dogs Facebook page – but don’t worry, you can still find me and my mutts right here, at my original blog!

So how did I come to this decision, you ask? Because I am a writer, which means, I am also a procrastinator. Quite frankly, Facebook is not a good place for a procrastinator to be.

As a fledgling writer, I understand the need to build a platform for my writing, which is one of the reasons I am here, now, at this blog. But the other reason I am here, is because I really enjoy sharing my stories with you – my ever faithful reader.

If I’m perusing posts on Facebook for four hours a day, it does not leave me much time to write!

These days, more and more of us are drowning in responsibilities – some necessary, and some by choice. Currently, I am heading into my busy season at work, which will limit the time available to me to write. It is also dog show season, another time waster (albeit a fun one). I am also here, on my blog, at least one time per week – hoping to connect with one or more of my readers. When I’m not training my dogs, caring for them, or cleaning up after them – I am spending time submitting various finished works of both fiction and non, hoping that one or more of them will find a good home.

In my down time (Ha!) I am immersed in the pages of Susannah Charleson’s brilliant book, Scent of the Missing, which I would highly recommend for all fans of dog memoirs, people interested in search and rescue dogs - and all lovers of the gallant golden retriever!

As for future works of my own, I am in the throes of writing my first novel. Not to give away the plot, but for all of you suspense fans, I promise it will be a page turner - and - the story revolves around a dog! Don't forget to check back for updates on its progress; I hope to have a final draft completed by fall.

Finally, above all the rest, I have been finding little time, if any, for my wonderful husband, Nick, the man behind my website, this blog, and most of the poignant photos it contains. He works diligently in the background, assisting me with all of my technical issues, editing pages, videos and photos, listening to me whine, and constantly cheering me on – leaving him little or no time for his own endeavors. Yet he never complains.

Sacrificing Facebook is the most logical choice, and I hope all of my wonderful readers will continue to follow me here.

I agree!  Social media is very addicting and can quickly become a major time-suck.

It sounds like you have a lot on your plate and I think it makes sense to alleviate some of the pressure!

Yup - I'm sure you of all people understand that, what with all the packing. Smile

Facebook is a time sucker, isn't it! Our Mama was addicted to Farmville before we started this blog. She hasn't had time for Farmville because of our blog though... but she's always getting a million requests from friends who want her to join other "villes" like Frontierville, Cityville, Fishville, Petville, etc, etc, etc!!!!

If I remember correctly, your Mama is also a fellow procrastinator (um, I mean writer), so she knows all about wasting time on the internet when she should really be in MS Word. Smile

Dennis the Vizsla

Thanks for stopping by Dennis's blog!  Is this the vizsla that was caught around the Latham area last winter?  If so, we sent a donation for her rehabilitation last year.  Being expatriate upstate New Yorkers ourselves we were happy (and amazed) that she had lasted out in the wild so long.  Glad she wasn't out there for THIS winter!

Yes - that's our Meadow. Her foster mom named her, because she was wild, yet peaceful. Smile

Thank you so much for donating for her care. You would be happy to know your money went towards a good cause: They spayed her (unfortunately she was with pups), they removed several broken teeth (she was most likely hit by a car), and they removed a growth from her muzzle (which turned out to be benign).

Yes - this winter would have been awful. I don't understand how she made it either, she shivers if the temp goes below 40, and her favorite spot is plastered to our baseboard. (Making up for lost time, I guess.) Smile

She is our first Vizsla, but definitely not our last. They are really amazing dogs. (as you know).

Thanks for popping by my blog as well. It's nice to meet a fellow writer / Vizsla rescuer!
