TWO Weird Issues Caught on Tape

April 2, 2012 16:59 by Donna

Near the middle of February, Toby had several (two??) episodes where he was circling in the house and whining - but each time I brought him out to the yard, he didn't want to go. He just wanted to lay out there and not come back in the house. Similar to the weird panic thing he had last June, which our vet never found an answer for, so I chalked it off to Toby just being Toby. Until near the end of the month, when he had a severe episode.

Not only was he circling and whining, he was trembling and his heart was racing. It took me several minutes of holding him in place before he finally stopped.

I called the vet and got an appointment within the hour. Nick came home from his class just as I was leaving for the vet, so he came along with me. As we drove, I lamented about how I thought Toby had just had a seizure and that while he was doing it I heard Leah making "the noise" again, and it seemed all our dogs kept having issues...

The vet examined Toby thoroughly and said it sounded neurological. He asked us to try to get it on video and to see if he always circled in the same direction.

For the next two weeks I kept the camera on hand, but Toby only had two minor circling episodes, nothing like the one that had prompted the vet visit, and I wasn't even sure it was the same behavior. But I did notice during both of them that he always circled to the right - and I also noticed that Leah had made the noise immediately before he started. It was strange, but each time, I was able to stop him fairly easily and then he was fine, so I wasn't able to catch it on tape.

I called our vet and gave him an update, and then we went away. As you know Toby stayed with a friend - who reported he didn't have an episode the entire time he was there.

But just last night, only two days after returning home, he had another one. And guess what prompted it?

You got it - Leah made "the noise."

She was lying off to his right, chewing on a bone, and made a noise like she was trying to clear her throat. Toby started circling right away and Nick had his cell phone handy and got the whole thing on tape. It still wasn't as severe of an episode as the one where I brought him to the vet - he wasn't trembling and his heart wasn't racing - but if you watch it, you will see how unresponsive he is to Nick speaking to him. He looks terrified, and he keeps glancing in Leah's direction. You'll also hear her making the noise several times during the following video:

If you can't view the video above, you can view it HERE.

Anyone ever see anything like this? Some kind of weird circling episode prompted by a simple noise? We sent the video off to our vet and we're waiting for his response, but I can't make heads or tails of it. It's obviously behavioral, but it sure isn't normal. I'm now wondering if we'll end up with two dogs on Prozac?

4/3/12 - UPDATE - I spoke with our vet, and he too feels it's behavioral, but not enough to warrant medication at this point. He wants us to just watch and see if the problem worsens, and keep him informed.

Meadow's Still Begging for Your Votes

August 19, 2011 16:17 by Donna

Apparently, Meadow has been learning how to use the camera while Nick is busy "Clicking that Button" at FuzzyNation, and as the contest nears its end, she has asked me to share her final plea with you. For those who cannot view the video on your screen, you can view it HERE.

And please remember to vote on Friday, on Saturday, and again on Sunday before noon - Meadow has advanced again in the competition, she's at fifth place with well over 1000 votes, (thank you voters!!), but she has a long way to go to have a chance of winning some money for the Vizsla Club of Central New England to use to help more homeless dogs find forever homes. We are running against some rescues that have a huge amount of supporters; won't you please help the little guy (or gal) by voting for Meadow, and asking your Facebook friends to do the same?

Meadow asked me to share her latest video with you, and honestly, I was kind of afraid not to. So without further delay, here it is, The Prisoner Part II:

For those whose cannot see the video on your screen, you can view it HERE at our YouTube account. Hope you all enjoy it, and please, "Click Dat Button" today and everyday thru August 21st at Fuzzy Nation on Facebook. Nick (and the Vizsla Club of Central New England) are depending on you!

Meadow's Gone Off the Deep End!

August 10, 2011 23:20 by Donna

It's 11:30 PM, and we checked Fuzzy Nation before shutting the laptop for the night, and we discovered that Meadow dropped from fourth place to sixth. I'm terrified of what she might do when she finds out, well, because, she's kind of lost it. Please vote for Meadow at Fuzzy Nation and ask your friends to do the same. Not only is the Vizsla Club of New England counting on your votes, but so is Nick.

Watch and see:

Third Time's a Charm

August 6, 2011 16:42 by Donna

Okay - here is take three of Meadow's Rally Video. Hope you are all able to finally view it!

This footage is from Sue Reising's Rally class over the winter. The first half of the video is hard to see, as it was recorded using a cell phone, however, we wanted to include it to show how much Meadow progressed by the next video, which was shot a few weeks later. The second class was taped with an actual camera, (which gave Meadow pause since she is a bit camera shy), but for the most part, look at that little Vizsla wag! We are so very proud of how far Meadow has come.

In fact, we have some great news...

Meadow and Nick passed their Canine Good Citizen Test given by Sue Scelzi at our Vizsla Fun Day today with the Vizsla Club of Long Island. Plus, Meadow and Toby had an awesome day; they both met lots of friendly people and dogs, got to eat lots of goodies, and aside from a tent that nearly fell over in the wind, Meadow did not have much to be frightened of. And even that, she recovered from quickly. All in all, it was a great day!

Hope you all enjoy Nick's newest edition of Meadow's video journals:

So, the Wait Might be Just a Little Longer....

August 5, 2011 11:57 by Donna

Apparently, the music that Nick used as background for Meadow's Rally video infringed upon a copyright, and the video is blocked. Usually You Tube tells us when this occurs, and Nick changes the music before we share the video with all of you.

Not this time.

Oddly enough, it's still playing on our computer. But several of my readers have commented that it is not working on theirs. I apologize if you are one of the people who cannot view it. Nick's working on correcting the problem, and we'll upload the new video as soon as we are able...

Sorry for the continued wait.

The Long Awaited Meadow Rally Video

August 4, 2011 15:48 by Donna

UPDATE: The Wait Might be Just a Little Longer

Nick had time today to upload the video that we promised of Nick and Meadow at Sue Reising's Rally class. This footage is from over the winter. The first half of the video is hard to see, as the footage was taken with a cell phone, but we wanted to include it so that everyone could see how much she improved within a matter of weeks. (The second half of the video is much clearer)

Hope you enjoy this much needed break from my series of recent puppy mill posts.

I also wanted to add, for those who were not aware, if you subscribe by email, you need to visit my actual blog page to see any videos - unfortunately there is no way for me to email a video. It's easy, just click on the link at the top of the email, and it will take you directly to the post that you wish to view. If you have any difficulty, let me know.

A Week in Review

July 27, 2011 15:26 by Donna

Nick and I were on vacation last week, during which time we tackled some home organizing projects that have been haunting me ever since we recently started watching the show “Hoarders” on Netflix. Later in the week, once five years worth of tax and business papers were sorted and shred, and an entire basement worth of crap was either tossed or donated, we also spent a lot of time with the dogs.

During the week, Leah accompanied Meadow to Rally class, and unfortunately for her, (who has only attended three other Rally classes in her lifetime), the course was a learning course, consisting of over twenty signs set up in rows – from Novice through Excellent. But we muddled through, worked on our pivots, and did one run while Leah dragged her leash through the entire course, right past the “Honor” dog – which did not stress me nearly so much as whenever I attempt the same stunt with Toby.

Meadow also accompanied Leah to Nose Work, where she sat on the sidelines with Nick and watched with keen interest as Leah and the other dogs took turns shoving their heads into boxes. But when our instructor offered to let her do a search, Meadow drew the line at being offered a box of her own, deciding the boxes weren’t so interesting after all, and the other dogs could keep ‘em.

Then Nick accompanied me and Toby to our Nose Work class on Saturday, where it was so hot that poor Toby abandoned his search, lay down, and looked at me with a look that said, “You find it.” But the good news is, Blue Ribbon Dog Training, (where we take our Nose Work class), is moving on August 1st – to an air conditioned facility in Bohemia. Air conditioning. Yay!

During our week off, Nick took Meadow on many walks around the neighborhood, and I accompanied them while alternating between Toby and Leah at the end of my leash. (I have not yet mastered the two-dog walk, and it this point, it is doubtful I ever will). We walked up and down streets, through the woods, and made a few trips to K-Mart – where we all sat on the bench together and people watched. We even got up early each day to beat the heat, which is quite an accomplishment for me. I am not a morning person.

AND FINALLY – Meadow saw the beach for what we are guessing was the first time in her life. Emboldened by Toby’s presence, she even stepped into the waves. And out again. And in again. Both dogs were extremely hot after the ¾ of a mile or so walk down to the water at Gardiner’s Park in Bay Shore, so we couldn’t stay as long as we liked – but for a first visit to the sand, Meadow did extremely well. There were a few times that she appeared unsure, but her tail wagged lots – and never tucked once – so that was a major success in my book.

Additionally, Meadow and Toby got to meet a few friendly dogs on the way to and from the beach and again while we sat on a shady bench by the pond to cool off after our walk. Toby even got to play under a sprinkler, for a few moments, until a town employee drove approximately two feet, (on a tractor that she had been sitting stagnant on during our entire visit), in order to inform me that the sprinkler was actually for watering grass and not for watering dogs. She then proceeded to glare at me from her guard post until I led my disappointed Lab away.

At the end of the week, after I realized that Leah had never seen the beach either, (she has only gone swimming in a mountain lake), I decided it was a good idea if she accompanied Nick, Me, and Meadow to a small beach in Blue Point. Leah clearly let me know what she thought of that decision by taking a big dump on the beach, only moments after arriving. She did not like the waves, or the sand, or the heat, and could not be convinced that going even ankle deep into the surf was a good idea. Due to Leah’s misery, and several horseflies that found Meadow particularly sweet, and a Seagull that used my back for target practice - we cut our second beach visit even shorter than the previous beach visit. Toby will be my dog of choice for all future trips to the shore, and for once, I think Leah won't mind being left behind.

I hope you enjoy the following video from our beach days:

After we returned from the beach and rinsed the salty water off the girls, we endured Toby’s jealous sniffing, and then allowed him to open his new handmade tug toy, which we won a few weeks back from an informative blog, “Success just Clicks,” written by a positive dog trainer who also makes homemade tug toys. Toby had already stolen and torn the package open a few days earlier while Nick and I were in the midst of cleaning chaos, but I didn’t let him have it until we could get it on video; I wanted Tena, (the blog author and tug weaver), to see the dogs opening and playing with their prize.

Although Toby could care less about the camera, Meadow refused to play tug with Toby for more than a few moments once she realized she was being filmed, and Leah, (who normally tugs quite well with me), would not even take the toy while the video camera was in her presence. My senior was either feeling extremely camera shy, or she was still shell shocked from the beach, so I decided not to torture her by subjecting her to the horrors of being taped.

But we did get lots of video of Toby and a few shots of Meadow practicing self control and playing with their new tug. One thing I wanted to point out in the following tug video is how well Toby automatically sat while waiting an excruciating long time for me to take the tag off his new toy, and how well he waited for Meadow to finish her turn playing tug. I noticed that I accidentally dangled the toy right in front of his face during his patient down-stay, and he never even grabbed for it – which for Toby, is quite impressive. I know I often complain about his bad behaviors, but at other times, he is just such a good dog, and in this particular video, he really makes me proud. Nick was kind enough to keep my face out of most of the shots, (I despise being filmed), but unfortunately you can hear me quite well, so please just try to ignore my endless babble, and focus on the dogs instead:

Lastly, I wanted to mention that Walt is still looking for that special someone to provide a roof over his head while he undergoes his heartworm treatment….Are YOU that special someone?

Another Meadow Video

July 6, 2011 20:14 by Donna

So, Nick had time to upload a little more footage. This video is from January 2011, and it is of Meadow's first play date with Mary K Chelton's Everedi's Golden Nugget JH, affectionately known to his friends as just sweet, playful Nugget. For those who are wondering, Meadow is dragging a long line in this video, you just can't see the bright yellow lead against the snow.

Hope you enjoyed yet another of Nick's home Meadow Movies. Next up, Meadow at Rally class...
